Key Stage 1 Curriculum Statement
At Fairfield Primary, we firmly believe that parents continue to play a crucial role in their children’s education as they transition into Key Stage 1. We recognise the strong foundation built in the Early Years and aim to build upon the strengths, skills, and knowledge each child brings with them as they progress through school. We encourage children to share their interests, ideas, and experiences, celebrating their individuality and the diverse communities they are part of.
Our carefully planned Key Stage 1 curriculum supports children in developing their knowledge and skills across all subject areas, while also fostering creativity and independent thinking. The curriculum is centred on the essential knowledge and skills required for future learning, but it is also flexible enough to adapt to the interests and needs of each unique group of children. This approach is further enriched by the positive relationships children form with their teachers, peers, and the wider school community.
At Fairfield Primary, we understand that reading remains a fundamental life skill, underpinning all areas of learning. For this reason, our Key Stage 1 curriculum is carefully planned around high-quality texts, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and traditional tales. These texts inspire a love of reading, develop a rich and varied vocabulary, and provide the foundation for learning in other areas, such as writing, science, and history. Phonics continues to play a central role in supporting all children to become confident and fluent readers by the end of Year 2.
We are committed to meeting the needs of all learners through a tailored approach to teaching and learning. Teachers in Key Stage 1 have a thorough understanding of the developmental milestones for children at this stage and use formative assessment strategies to adapt their teaching to meet the needs of each individual. This ensures that every child is appropriately challenged and supported to reach their full potential.
Our staff work closely with parents and carers to keep them informed about their child’s progress and to share strategies for supporting learning at home. This partnership is essential to ensure consistency between school and home, enabling every child to thrive.
At the end of Key Stage 1, children complete statutory assessments (commonly referred to as SATs) in reading, writing, and mathematics. These assessments, combined with teacher judgements, provide a clear picture of children’s attainment and readiness for the next stage of their education in Key Stage 2. Throughout this process, we remain focused on the needs of each child, ensuring they feel supported and confident as they move forward.
At Fairfield Primary, our aim is to provide an engaging, supportive, and inclusive environment where every child in Key Stage 1 can flourish academically, socially, and emotionally, laying the foundation for future success.
