Key Stage 2 Curriculum Statement
At Fairfield Primary, we recognise that Key Stage 2 is a crucial stage in children’s educational journey, where they build upon the strong foundation established in earlier years and develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed for their transition to secondary education.
Our Key Stage 2 curriculum is carefully designed to inspire a love of learning while equipping children with the essential skills and knowledge they need to succeed. We encourage every child to contribute their ideas and interests, allowing our curriculum to reflect the individuality of each class and the diverse communities we serve. This child-centred approach ensures that learning is relevant, engaging, and meaningful for all.
At Fairfield Primary, we place a strong emphasis on developing children’s reading, writing, and mathematical skills, recognising these as fundamental to their future success. Reading is at the heart of our curriculum, with children engaging with a wide range of high-quality texts, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and plays. These texts not only deepen their knowledge and vocabulary but also provide a springboard for learning across other subjects such as history, science, and geography.
In mathematics, we focus on developing a secure understanding of key concepts, problem-solving, and reasoning skills, ensuring that children are confident in applying their knowledge in practical and abstract contexts. Our writing curriculum emphasises the importance of clarity, creativity, and precision, with children encouraged to write for a variety of purposes and audiences.
We are committed to a broad and balanced curriculum, ensuring that subjects such as science, art, music, computing, and physical education are delivered with the same level of enthusiasm and expertise. We provide opportunities for children to explore new interests, develop their creativity, and gain confidence through collaborative and independent learning. Our curriculum is enriched further through educational visits, workshops, and extra-curricular activities that broaden children’s horizons and deepen their understanding of the wider world.
Teachers in Key Stage 2 have a thorough understanding of the National Curriculum and are skilled in adapting their teaching to meet the needs of all learners. Through ongoing formative assessments, teachers identify each child’s strengths and areas for development, ensuring lessons are appropriately challenging and accessible.
We also prioritise children’s personal development, helping them to build resilience, independence, and social skills. By promoting values such as respect, kindness, and responsibility, we ensure that Fairfield Primary is a safe and inclusive environment where every child can thrive.
At the end of Key Stage 2, children undertake statutory assessments (commonly referred to as SATs) in reading, mathematics, and grammar, punctuation, and spelling, with teacher assessments in writing and science. These assessments provide an important measure of their progress and readiness for the next stage of their education. Throughout this process, we support children to approach these challenges with confidence and a positive mindset.
At Fairfield Primary, our aim is to provide a stimulating, supportive, and inclusive environment in Key Stage 2 where every child is encouraged to reach their full potential, preparing them for a successful and fulfilling transition to secondary school and beyond.
