Forest School

Forest School forms a significant part of our enrichment provision, enabling children to learn through exploration, challenge and discovery within a natural environment. Through regular visits to woodland settings, pupils develop confidence, resilience, independence, teamwork and problem-solving skills while fostering a deep appreciation of the natural world. Outdoor learning is embedded across the curriculum and supports learning in Geography, History, Science, wellbeing and environmental sustainability. The Grand Day Out

One of the highlights of the Fairfield calendar is our much-anticipated Grand Day Out. This special annual event brings the entire school together to celebrate our unique location and love of the outdoors. Children from across the school take part in a whole-school walk within the beautiful Lake District, enjoying the opportunity to explore the local landscape, appreciate the natural environment and spend time together as a school community.

The Grand Day Out reflects our commitment to outdoor learning and provides pupils with opportunities to develop resilience, teamwork, independence and a sense of adventure. Along the way, children build confidence, challenge themselves and create lasting memories with their friends and teachers. It is deliberately timetabled as a September event to enable pupils to bond with their new teacher, support staff and peers outside of the classroom. 

As part of this tradition, our Year 6 pupils take part in a paddleboarding experience, providing an exciting and memorable way to celebrate the beginning of their final year of their primary school journey. This unique opportunity encourages children to step outside their comfort zones, develop new skills and demonstrate the confidence, perseverance and determination they have developed during their time at Fairfield.

The Grand Day Out is a wonderful example of how we make the most of our outstanding local environment, creating enriching experiences that support pupils' personal development and foster a lifelong appreciation of the outdoors.

Fieldwork 

Fieldwork is a key part of our Geography curriculum and provides valuable opportunities for children to develop their geographical knowledge and skills in real-world contexts. As part of our enrichment programme, pupils take part in a range of practical fieldwork experiences, including river studies, where they investigate features, processes and the impact of water on the landscape through first-hand observations and data collection.

Children also develop essential map-reading skills, learning how to use four and six-figure grid references, interpret maps and navigate using a range of geographical tools. These skills are further enhanced through orienteering activities in PE, where pupils apply their geographical understanding in practical and engaging outdoor challenges.

By combining geography, outdoor learning and physical activity, these enriching experiences help children develop confidence, problem-solving skills and a deeper understanding of the world around them, while making the most of our outstanding local environment and the opportunities it provides.

Educational Visits and Residential Experiences

We believe that firsthand experiences create powerful and memorable learning opportunities. Throughout their time at Fairfield, children participate in a wide variety of educational visits linked to their curriculum learning. These include visits to historical sites, museums, rivers, caves, stone circles, theatres and places of cultural significance. Residential visits further enhance our curriculum by developing independence, teamwork, leadership and resilience whilst providing opportunities to explore historical, geographical and environmental themes in authentic contexts.

These experiences help children make meaningful connections between classroom learning and the wider world, deepening both knowledge and understanding.

Historical Themed Visits

At Fairfield, we believe that history is best brought to life through real experiences. Our extensive programme of educational visits and residential opportunities allows pupils to step beyond the classroom and immerse themselves in the people, places and events they study.

Throughout their time at school, pupils participate in a wide range of historical visits linked directly to their learning. These include visits to Castlerigg Stone Circle, where children explore prehistoric Britain firsthand; Wordsworth House, providing insight into life in the Georgian period; Tullie House Museum and Keswick Museum, where pupils engage with artefacts and local history; castles, where children can better understand period in History including the Tudor and Normal Eras; and Vindolanda Roman Fort, where children experience life on the Roman frontier and deepen their understanding of Roman Britain.

Our school grounds and outdoor environments are used extensively to create immersive historical experiences. Pupils take part in battle re-enactments, bringing key historical events to life through role play and investigation. Linked to their study of the Stone Age, children engage in practical hunter-gatherer activities, exploring how early communities lived, survived and interacted with their environment. 

Other Trips

Children have the opportunity to visit Honister Slate Mine, where they discover the history and significance of Cumbria's mining industry while learning about the geography, geology and industrial heritage of the Lake District. These visits provide a fascinating insight into how people have shaped and used the local landscape over time.

Our coastal visits to the beach offer exciting opportunities for both geographical and scientific enquiry. Pupils investigate pollution and take time to simply build sandcastles and enjoy the coastal environment. 

Outdoor adventure is further enhanced through visits to Padel (racket sport) in Workington, where pupils participate in activities that promote teamwork, resilience, independence and confidence- learning a new sport and skill. 

We also make use of local nature reserves, where children can study wildlife, habitats, ecosystems and conservation firsthand. 

As part of our Religious Education curriculum, pupils regularly visit local places of worship to develop a deeper understanding of faith, belief and the role religion plays within communities. Our close links with local church provide valuable opportunities for children to explore Christian beliefs and traditions in an authentic setting, while learning about the significance of worship, prayer, celebration and community.

The Theatre

Children also benefit from visits to the theatre, providing opportunities to experience the excitement and inspiration of live performance. These visits include productions of popular West End shows, including Matilda, Frozen and The Lion King- exposing pupils to high-quality acting, music, storytelling and stagecraft, while helping to develop their cultural awareness and appreciation of the performing arts. Experiencing professional theatre allows children to engage with literature, music and the arts in a memorable way, inspiring creativity, imagination and confidence.

In addition, pupils enjoy attending local theatre productions, including the renowned Horrible Histories theatre productions, which bring key periods of history to life through humour, music and interactive storytelling. 

These cultural experiences form an important part of our enrichment programme, broadening pupils' horizons, developing cultural capital and ensuring that all children have access to high-quality artistic and educational opportunities beyond the classroom.

Making the Most of Our Local Community

At Fairfield Primary School, we are incredibly fortunate to be located in the heart of Cockermouth, a town rich in history, culture, geography and community assets. We believe that the local area is an invaluable extension of the classroom, providing authentic learning experiences that help children make meaningful connections between their studies and the world around them.

Throughout their time at Fairfield, pupils regularly explore Cockermouth and the surrounding area through a wide range of educational visits and enrichment activities. Geography learning is enhanced through local walks and river fieldwork opportunities, allowing children to investigate human and physical features, develop map-reading skills and understand how communities and landscapes have changed over time.

Our pupils also benefit from visits to important local landmarks, including Cockermouth Castle and Wordsworth House, where they develop a deeper understanding of the town's rich historical heritage and the lives of significant individuals connected to the area. These first-hand experiences bring historical learning to life and help children develop a greater appreciation of their local community.

The nearby Harris Park provides a wonderful setting for both curriculum learning and enrichment. Children use the park for activities including crown green bowling, science investigations linked to living things and their habitats and environmental projects involving planting and the study of seasonal change. These opportunities allow pupils to learn through observation, enquiry and practical investigation within their local environment.

Strong community partnerships further enrich our curriculum. Pupils visit the local fire station and learn about fire safety, emergency response and community service, while sessions with Mountain Rescue provide valuable insights into teamwork, risk management, outdoor safety and the important role volunteers play within our local area.

We also work closely with our local secondary school, Cockermouth School, providing opportunities for pupils to attend themed curriculum days, sporting events, transition activities and specialist workshops. These experiences help broaden aspirations, develop confidence and support a smooth transition to the next stage of education. In addition, pupils benefit from regular swimming lessons at the local Sports Centre, developing an important life skill while promoting physical health, safety and wellbeing.

By making full use of our local community and the exceptional opportunities available within and around Cockermouth, we provide pupils with rich, memorable experiences that deepen learning, strengthen community connections and help children develop a strong sense of place, belonging and pride in the area in which they live.

Residentials

At Fairfield Primary School, we are committed to providing our students with a well-rounded education that extends beyond the classroom. Our residential package plays a vital role in this mission, offering children the chance to explore life in modern Britain through visits to some of the country’s most significant cities, including London. Alongside city visits, our residential trips offer children the chance to take part in outward-bound adventures, engaging in exciting activities in a natural environment. Whether conquering a climbing wall, navigating a canoe trip, or working together in team challenges, these experiences build confidence, resilience, and teamwork while encouraging a love for the outdoors. Many aspects of our residentials are designed to complement our bespoke curriculum, ensuring students can make meaningful connections between their classroom learning and real-world experiences. Arts, Culture and Creativity

Creativity is celebrated throughout Fairfield. Pupils access a rich programme of artistic and cultural experiences through Art, Music, Drama and performance opportunities.

Our Music enrichment programme includes:

Performances and Productions

At Fairfield Primary School, performance is a cherished part of school life and an important element of our enrichment offer. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to perform in front of an audience, develop confidence, express themselves creatively and experience the excitement of working together towards a shared goal. Our productions are a highlight of the school calendar and are often described as the "hottest tickets in town!"

Every year group takes centre stage during their time at Fairfield, ensuring that all pupils experience the thrill of being part of a full-scale production. Our youngest children begin their performing journey with Nursery, Reception and Year 1 Christmas productions, delighting audiences with festive songs, Nativity storytelling and memorable performances. Year 4 also performs a Christmas production, allowing older pupils to further develop their acting, singing and stage presence.

During the Spring term, Year 3 and Year 5 present their productions: Year 3 performs the inspiring production of The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, while Year 5 takes on the much-loved musical Oliver!, providing pupils with opportunities to develop their acting, singing and performance skills through more complex productions.

As pupils reach the end of each key stage, they celebrate with major Summer productions. Year 2 marks the end of Key Stage 1 with the vibrant and energetic Bee Musical, whilst Year 6 concludes their Fairfield journey with a spectacular end-of-year show. Depending on the West End production pupils have experienced during their London residential, Year 6 may perform favourites such as Matilda, Frozen or The Lion King, creating a fitting finale to their primary school years.

These productions are far more than performances. They help children develop confidence, resilience, teamwork, oracy. communication skills, creativity and self-belief. Pupils learn the value of commitment and collaboration as they rehearse, support one another and work towards a shared goal. Every production is an all-singing, all-dancing celebration of talent, enthusiasm and hard work, providing unforgettable memories for children, staff and families alike.

Through our extensive programme of performances and productions, we aim to foster a lifelong love of the arts while giving every child the opportunity to shine on stage and experience the magic of live performance.

Shakespeare

In addition, as part of our curriculum, each year group studies a Shakespeare play. Through age-appropriate adaptations and engaging classroom activities, pupils are introduced to the stories, characters and themes of one of Britain's most influential writers. Studying Shakespeare enriches children's understanding of language, literature and theatre while broadening their experiences beyond the everyday Curriculum. This forms an important part of our commitment to developing cultural capital, ensuring that all pupils have access to significant works of literature that have shaped our culture and continue to influence storytelling, performance and the arts today. By exploring Shakespeare's work, children develop confidence in discussing complex ideas, deepen their appreciation of literary heritage and gain valuable experiences that support their future learning and wider understanding of the world.

Art, including our Annual Gallery

Art is highly valued and celebrated at Fairfield Primary School, and we are committed to providing children with a wide range of enriching experiences that inspire creativity and broaden their artistic horizons. Pupils study the work of both famous and local artists, exploring a variety of artistic styles, techniques and cultural influences. Through educational visits, visiting artists, practical workshops and opportunities for experimentation and discovery, children are encouraged to develop their creativity while gaining a deeper understanding of the role art plays in shaping our history, culture and communities. 

Our enrichment provision enables children to work across a wide range of media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, textiles, printmaking and digital art. A particular highlight of the year is our Annual Art Gallery, which showcases outstanding artwork from across the school and celebrates the creative achievements of our pupils. These opportunities allow children to take pride in their work, share their artistic talents with others and develop confidence as young artists, while demonstrating the high profile that Art and Design enjoys at Fairfield.

Leadership and Pupil Voice

At Fairfield Primary School, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to lead, contribute and make a positive difference to school life. Through a wide range of leadership roles and pupil voice opportunities, children develop confidence, responsibility, teamwork and communication skills while learning that their opinions matter and can help shape the future of our school. School Parliament

Our School Parliament provides pupils with a genuine voice in school improvement. Elected Year 6 MP representatives gather the views of their constituents, discuss issues that matter to pupils and work alongside staff to help shape decision-making across the school. Through this role, children gain first-hand experience of democracy, leadership and representation while developing the confidence to advocate for themselves and others.

Curriculum Crusaders

Curriculum Crusaders are passionate ambassadors for subjects and help to promote learning across the school. Working alongside subject leaders, they help to gather pupil views, support the development subjects, help evaluate learning experiences and celebrate achievements across different areas of the curriculum. This role helps pupils develop responsibility while deepening their understanding and enthusiasm for learning.

Eco-Council

The Eco-Council is committed to helping Fairfield become an environmentally responsible school. Members lead projects linked to sustainability, recycling, energy conservation and environmental awareness, encouraging pupils to think about their impact on the world around them. Through practical action and campaigning, children learn how they can contribute to creating a more sustainable future.

Mini Police

Our Mini Police programme provides Year 5 pupils with a unique opportunity to work alongside local Police Officers and learn about citizenship, community responsibility and keeping safe. Through projects and community-based activities, children develop a greater understanding of the role of the Police and the importance of respect, responsibility and positive community relationships.

Bright Stars

The Bright Stars Enterprise Programme provides pupils with an exciting opportunity to become young entrepreneurs while making a positive difference within their community. Working as a team, pupils are challenged to create and run their own social enterprise, developing an understanding of how businesses operate while raising awareness and support for worthwhile causes.

The Honours Programme

At Fairfield, we are one of the pioneering schools to implement the Honours Programme, which provides pupils with the unique opportunity to learn about the British Honours System, write their very own Honour Nomination and even meet a Lord Lieutenant at a special ceremony. 

Pupil Voice Projects

Throughout the year, pupils are regularly consulted on school developments, curriculum initiatives and new opportunities. Through questionnaires, focus groups, learning reviews and leadership meetings, children are encouraged to share their views and contribute ideas that help improve school life. Sport Enrichment Opportunities

We are proud to offer a diverse range of sport enrichment opportunities that extend beyond the traditional PE curriculum. Pupils have opportunities to experience activities such as Yoga, Dance, Padel and Paddleboarding, allowing them to discover new interests and develop a wider range of physical skills. Festivals and Tournaments

Children regularly participate in local sports festivals and tournaments that celebrate participation, teamwork and achievement. These events provide opportunities for pupils to compete alongside and against children from other schools, while experiencing the excitement and enjoyment of organised sport. Festivals and tournaments help children develop resilience, communication skills and a sense of belonging while promoting the values of fairness, respect and inclusion.

Mental Health Week

Each year, Fairfield takes part in Children's Mental Health Week, providing dedicated opportunities to explore emotional well-being, resilience and self-care. Through assemblies, workshops, classroom activities and discussions, children learn about the importance of positive mental health and develop strategies which support their emotional well-being. The week encourages open conversations and helps pupils understand that looking after their mental health is just as important as looking after their physical health. However, at Fairfield, we focus mental health every day of the year. 

Anti-Bullying Week

Our annual Anti-Bullying Week reinforces the importance of kindness, respect and positive relationships. Pupils explore what bullying is, how to recognise it and what they can do if they are worried about themselves or others. Through a range of age-appropriate activities, discussions and assemblies, children learn how to be supportive friends, celebrate differences and contribute to an inclusive school environment where everyone feels safe, valued and respected. Odd Socks Day is a natural highlight of the week! Fairfield is proud to be an anti-bullying school (in-line with Anti-Bullying Alliance). 

Safeguarding Week

Each year, Fairfield holds a dedicated Safeguarding Week, providing pupils with age-appropriate opportunities to learn about keeping themselves safe both online and offline. Through workshops, discussions, assemblies and visits from many external professionals, children explore topics such as: water safety, fire safety, contexualised community safety, online safety, healthy relationships, trusted adults, personal well-being, managing risk etc. The week reinforces key safeguarding messages and helps pupils develop the confidence and knowledge needed to make safe choices.

Well-being Initiatives

Promoting well-being is at the heart of life at Fairfield. Throughout the year, pupils participate in a range of wellbeing initiatives designed to support emotional health, self-esteem and positive relationships. These activities help children develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, resilience and coping strategies while fostering a supportive culture where every child feels valued and able to thrive.

Outdoor Adventurous Activities

Our unique location provides exceptional opportunities for outdoor adventure. Pupils regularly engage in activities that challenge them physically and mentally, encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones and develop resilience, independence and problem-solving skills. Experiences such as forest school activities, walking in the Lake District, paddleboarding and residential visits help children build confidence, work collaboratively and develop a lifelong appreciation of the outdoors.

Active Lunchtime Opportunities

We recognise the importance of keeping children active throughout the school day. A wide range of active lunchtime opportunities are available, enabling pupils to participate in organised games, sports activities and physical challenges. These sessions encourage children to stay active, build friendships, develop teamwork skills and enjoy the many physical and social benefits of regular exercise.

Through our extensive programme of sporting, health and well-being opportunities, we aim to inspire every child to develop healthy habits, positive attitudes and a lifelong commitment to physical and emotional wellbeing. Annual Remembrance Day Commemorations

Remembrance Day is an important event within the Fairfield calendar and provides pupils with a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by previous generations. Through assemblies, classroom activities, poetry, artwork and acts of remembrance, children learn about the significance of remembrance, service and peace. These experiences help pupils develop a deeper understanding of historical events while promoting respect, gratitude and reflection. Links to our History curriculum ensure that children understand the lasting impact of conflict and the importance of remembrance in contemporary society. In our school, we create a wall of remembrance, with each child creating a placing a poppy upon it. 

Civil Rights and Equality Projects

Throughout the year, pupils explore themes of equality, diversity, inclusion and social justice through curriculum projects, assemblies and PSHE learning. Children learn about significant individuals and movements that have helped shape a fairer society, while developing an understanding of protected characteristics, human rights and the importance of challenging discrimination. These projects encourage pupils to become thoughtful, respectful and active citizens who value the contributions of all people within society.

Charity Fundraising Events

Supporting others is an important part of life at Fairfield. Pupils regularly participate in fundraising activities for local, national and international charities, developing compassion, generosity, empathy and social responsibility. Whether raising money through sponsored events, community projects, enterprise activities or themed fundraising days, children learn that even small actions can have a positive impact on the lives of others. Safeguarding Week

British Values Assemblies

Our programme of British Values Assemblies helps pupils develop an understanding of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Through real-life examples, current affairs and discussion, children learn how these values underpin life in modern Britain and how they can contribute positively to their school, community and society. We use the resource of Picture News to help deliver these sessions. 

Cultural Affairs Assemblies

Our weekly Cultural Affairs Assemblies broaden pupils' understanding of the world beyond Fairfield. Linked to current events, significant anniversaries, cultural celebrations and global issues, these assemblies encourage children to think critically about the world around them and develop an appreciation of different cultures, traditions and perspectives. They provide valuable opportunities for discussion, reflection and debate while helping pupils build cultural capital and global awareness.

Community Performances and Local Events

As a school at the heart of its community, Fairfield actively participates in a range of local events, performances and celebrations throughout the year. Children perform at community venues, participate in local commemorations and work alongside community groups and organisations. Our choir regularly sings within the local community, while pupils contribute to a variety of events that strengthen relationships between the school and local residents. Our Artwork is often displayed in shop windows! These experiences foster a strong sense of belonging, civic pride and community spirit while helping children develop confidence and communication skills.

Annual Careers Fayre

Our annual Careers Fayre is a key event in the Fairfield calendar and provides Year 5 and 6 pupils with an exciting opportunity to learn about the wide range of careers and pathways available to them in the future. Children meet professionals from a variety of sectors, including: STEM, nuclear, healthcare, engineering, emergency services, medical, sport, architecture, illustration, business, hospitality etc. Through discussions, demonstrations and practical activities, pupils gain valuable insights into different professions and begin to understand the skills, qualifications and personal qualities needed for success in the workplace.

STEM Projects

Throughout the year, pupils participate in a range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) projects that encourage creativity, innovation and problem-solving. These projects challenge children to think critically, work collaboratively and apply their learning to real-life situations. Whether designing structures, solving engineering challenges or exploring scientific investigations, pupils develop resilience, teamwork and a deeper understanding of how STEM subjects influence the world around them. Children enjoy their annual STEM Day, which takes place in the Autumn term and is always centred around a key theme. 

Visits from Professionals

Children regularly benefit from visits from professionals who share their expertise, experiences and career journeys. These encounters help pupils understand how the knowledge and skills they develop in school can lead to a wide variety of future opportunities. Visitors help to raise aspirations, challenge stereotypes and inspire children to think ambitiously about their future education and career choices.

Fairfield is committed to providing meaningful encounters with employers and members of the wider community. Through workshops, presentations, themed days and collaborative projects, pupils gain an understanding of the world of work and the contribution different industries make to society. Enterprise education plays an important role in developing pupils' confidence, creativity and leadership skills. Through initiatives such as the Bright Stars Enterprise Programme, children have the opportunity to establish and run their own businesses, developing products, managing budgets, marketing their ideas and selling goods to customers. Throughout the year, Fairfield pupils take part in a wide range of cultural celebrations that help them develop an appreciation of the diverse world in which they live. Encounters with Explorers and Adventurers

As part of our Geography curriculum, pupils have opportunities to hear from explorers, adventurers and individuals who have experienced some of the world's most challenging environments firsthand/ who live overseas. These inspiring encounters help bring geographical learning to life, particularly within topics such as extreme weather, natural disasters and Australia. By learning from people who have explored remote locations, overcome significant challenges and experienced different cultures, children develop a greater understanding of the world, broaden their aspirations and gain an appreciation of the adventurous spirit that drives exploration and discovery.
